Pinker captures the essentials of language brilliantly. His description has lead me re-think the way I write and talk in general. In my honest opinion it should be fundamental literature for native-, as well as foreign speakers of the english language. On top of that the book is amazingly entertaining to read and will make you giggle quite a few times.20/10. Will read again.

This book is more entertaining than useful. It is well written though and fun to read. Recommended if you're interested in the topic, but not if you want to hone your writing skills

The book is full of extended examples and gives many helpful recommendations for writers in fiction and non-fiction.The deviation from classical style guides is refreshing and probably more useful than writing down "iron rules of style".However, scholars which do not come from a Non-english speaking country must be already at a relatively high level of writing as many finenesses of language which Pinker highlights are not obvious for Non-natives.

Remember "defending your thesis" in college? You need to un-learn that if you are going to write something that people want to read. This book is a step in that direction. This book + Strunk and White will keep you moving forward.

IMHO this book is much better than "the element of style" if you were a non-native speaker and ever wondered why the rules are rules, and if all rules are really unbreakable.

You can like it, agree with it or not, but this is a book to be read. It proposes and discusses the counter-intuitive concept that violence has reduced drastically over time, and Europe today is the safest place ever in human history. Fundamental.
